Microsoft Teams is not natively a connected phone system. So, if you wish for your Teams instance to become a system in which you can make and receive external voice calls, you have to add calling abilities.  

Voip Unlimited’s Teams Trunk does just this, it connects your Microsoft Teams software with the outside world via PSTN. Connection to the PSTN network allows you to make and receive telephone calls from outside your organisation, this can mean one consolidated system for not only internal communications and productivity but also for your customer services team, clients and the general public to contact you.  

You need a minimum “Microsoft 365 Business basic” license with a “Business Voice  without  Calling Plan” License. To connect your Microsoft Teams to the outside world to enable calling, you will need a Teams Trunk from Voip Unlimited.

Yes, Skype for Business is ending in 2021, if you’re using it currently you will experience no change in service until July 31st 2021, but we would recommend migrating to Microsoft Teams straightaway before the bottle-neck begins and benefit from the move convenient and advanced way of communicating within the workplace.

Firstly, choosing Teams Trunk means using an ITSP, call quality and voice services are what we do, not what Microsoft do. We specialise in it.

Teams Trunks is compatible and approved, you have many more options including phone numbers, locations, porting of your existing numbers, plus let’s not forget it is significantly more cost-effective than Microsoft Calling Plans. 

Microsoft License bolt-on “Business Voice without Calling Plan” is the minimum requirement to enable teams alongside a 365 Business basic seat licence.  If you are using larger Microsoft License packages E1, E3 or E5 (which includes teams) the telephone element can be achieved with the simple addition of the “phone system” add-on license. A phone number is required for each Microsoft Team user, purchased separately. Once you have the appropriate license you simply need to add a Teams trunk from Voip Unlimited. 

  1. You need a Microsoft teams compatible ITSP (Voip Unlimited) who will provide you with a Teams FQDN URL to send your calls to (Fully Qualified Domain Name)
  2. Purchase Office 365 E3 license or lower (E1/E2) plus phone system & audio conferencing. If you wish to allow external people to call into your audio conferences. 
  3. Configure your team’s instance to use the FQDM we have given you as the PSTN Gateway.
  4. Et Voila!

A Session Border Controller is essentially a firewall. They’re used as a border between different networks to make sure data is transferred correctly. They also provide a layer of security and protection from attacks. 

When using a Voip Unlimited Teams Trunk, you don’t have all the hassle of setting up and managing a Session Border Controller, we look after all the security on our network and pass the calls into Microsoft’s cloud where they will route to your Teams instance, allowing your users to make and receive calls using Microsoft Teams.
